Review | REVLON ColorStay Foundation for Combination/Oily Skin

PRODUCT INFO & CLAIMS
- Flawless & weightless for 16 hours.
- OIL-FREE!!
- Helps control shine all day.
- Looks fresh & feels great for up to 24 hours.
- SPF 6 except for the darker shades, beginning with and including Golden Caramel.

APPLICATION
Lately, I've been mixing about 1/3 Maybelline SuperStay Foundation in 120 Sand Beige with about 2/3 REVLON ColorStay Foundation for Combination/Oily Skin in 330 Natural Tan. (I've stopped using the self-tanner that I reviewed a couple posts back--not because I didn't like it, but because I just wanted to test it out and use it at a later date--so the 330 Natural Tan is a bit dark for me currently.) Mixed together, these two foundations create a shade similar to REVLON ColorStay in 240 Medium Beige. (I'd just go ahead and purchase the 240 Medium Beige shade, but I don't have money to spend on foundation right now. lol. Long story. So, for now, I'm learning how to mix!)

I've used Maybelline SuperStay for a few months now (not mixed with anything else), and it does leave a bit of a dewy finish on my face and can look a tiny bit caky at times if you apply too much. REVLON ColorStay is supposed to be a matte foundation, so naturally, when I combine the SuperStay with the ColorStay, I still get a pretty matte finish!

However, I have used the ColorStay in 330 Natural Tan shade by itself when I was tan...and I loved it. My review will be based on how the ColorStay foundation applies and wears by itself--not with it mixed with another foundation.

I apply my liquid foundations with a flat-top brush, working from the inside of my face to the outside/toward my hairline. Then I use a translucent powder and a fluffy brush to set it.

EVALUATION OF PRODUCT CLAIMS
- FLAWLESS?  I have not by any means tried all or even most drugstore foundations, but of the ones that I have tried, REVLON ColorStay for Combination/Oily Skin is the one that makes me look the most flawless, even though I have quite a bit of acne scarring and still have some emerging acne. For those without problematic skin, this foundation just might make you look about as flawless as you're gonna get from a drugstore foundation!

- WEIGHTLESS?  This is the lightest weight drugstore foundation I've used for the coverage it gives. In fact, it may even a bit lighter weight feeling than some drugstore foundations that provide less coverage.

- HELPS CONTROL SHINE ALL DAY?  YES!! Finally. A drugstore brand of foundation that provides a matte finish that lasts! I usually have my foundation on for about 12 hours each day, and it still looks matte by the end of my night! This product gives the best shine-control out of any drugstore foundation that I've found. Cannot thank REVLON enough for this property of the foundation!! I've struggled with very oily skin and cystic & nodular acne for about 8 years now, and I have never found a foundation that actually controls the shine like this one.

- LOOKS FRESH & FEELS GREAT FOR UP TO 24 HOURS?  I don't know about 24 hours because I haven't worn the foundation for that long ever, but I can say that after wearing it for 12 hours in a row, it does still feel great on. It doesn't look quite as fresh as when you first apply it, but it still looks awesome for having the foundation on for that long! All other foundations I've tried either settle into fine lines/wrinkles after about 6 hours or show the oil from my skin through the layer of foundation. This foundation will keep you looking matte for a long time! Seriously...I don't even need to do any touch-ups or blotting ever.

- SPF 6?  This is somewhat of a low SPF for even a drugstore foundation. A lot of the time, foundations will have around SPF 10 or 15. However, I don't really look for SPF in my foundations, so this is not an issue to me. Although, not putting SPF in darker foundations supposedly keeps the darker foundations dark. Oftentimes the ingredients used to achieve SPF are very light in color and can leave a white-ish cast to a foundation. Naturally, this cast shows up more so in darker foundations than in lighter ones; this is why it's removed (although not every brand removes the SPF from darker foundations). If you have a deeper skin tone, make sure you purchase a foundation without an SPF!

PROS
- Amazing shade selection (20 total!) for a drugstore foundation, with shades ranging from Ivory to Mocha.

- Medium to full coverage--Great for those who, like me, have imperfections on the skin that you want to cover. I find that I need less of this foundation to cover my face and problem areas than I needed with Maybelline's SuperStay.

- Provides the most matte-like finish of any drugstore brand that I've tried, which is awesome for those of us with oily skin. Also, it looks matte the longest of any drugstore brand I've tried.

- DOES NOT break me out, even though my skin is very sensitive! This is a HUGE plus!

- This foundation is fairly inexpensive; I bought mine at WalMart for somewhere around $10-$11. It's somewhat on the higher end of drugstore foundation pricing, but is well worth the money when comparing to the other drugstore foundations. Also, it's a great price for a foundation in general; some high-end brands can be around $40. And once again, this foundations lasts me longer than any other drugstore foundation that I've tried, and all have been 1 fl. oz. of liquid in each.

CONS/CAUTIONS
- I would not recommend this product for normal, or especially, dry skin because it does provide such a matte finish, even on oily skin. I haven't tested the REVLON ColorStay for Normal/Dry Skin (for obvious reasons), but I've heard it's not as much of a miracle product for dry skin as the Combination/Oily Skin foundation is as much of a miracle product for oily skin. But that's mainly hearsay, and who knows if that's even right?

- To me, this foundation smells somewhat like the MAC Matchmaster foundations (& I say that because I've never tried any other MAC foundations). It has a faint paint-like (but not nearly that strong!!) smell to it. I really don't know what to call the smell or which ingredient/ingredient combination causes the smell. However, I would prefer makeup to smell like the actual ingredients as opposed to having a fragrance put into it. I know some people have stopped using this foundation because they really disliked the smell. Me? I actually think the foundation smells kind of good. lol. Idk why. I don't sit and smell it or anything; I just don't mind the smell. But regardless of whether or not you like the smell, it does not last--especially if you wear a lightly-fragranced setting spray over it. (I currently am using MAKE UP FOR EVER's Mist & Fix, and I have used Kat Von D's Lock 'N Load Makeup Setting Mist, which is my holy-grail setting spray. I do not ever smell the foundation after spraying either of these on my face after applying the foundation.)

BOTTOM LINE
A truly amazing product. I've had no issues with it whatsoever. I would recommend this foundation to anyone with oily skin. I can't guarantee that it won't break you out, simply because you never know what product will break you out until you try it. (For me, I loved the coverage and finish of MAC Matchmaster foundation, but it broke me out within 4 hours of application! I let my skin recover for a few weeks and tested it a couple more times to make sure it was the foundation that was breaking me out...and it was. I had no idea when I bought it that it was going to break me out. And the same product might not break you out. You just never know until you try it because everyone's skin is different.) So, for me, this foundation is a winner...and I kinda get the feeling that it's a winner for a lot of people with oily skin. If you decide to purchase it, let me know how this foundation works for you! Also, if you've already tried it, I'd like to hear opinions as well. :)

  1. Have you ever tried loose powder foundations like TRUblend Minerals by Covergirl or Mineral Wear by Physicians Formula? If so, I'd love to see a review of one!

    1. Yes. I've tried CoverGirl's TRUblend Minerals (and I may have tried the PF one you mentioned here a couple years ago). I can definitely do a review on at least one of those foundations for you, but it won't be up until a couple weeks from now because the TRUblend Minerals I have is at home (and I'm at college now). :/
Thanks for the question and topic suggestion though! It's been noted and put on my list of posts to write! :)

  2. I just returned Maybelline Super Stay Foundation in 120 Sand Beige because it does not last on my skin. I picked up Revlon in 180 Sand Beige and hope it is a better choice. I tried Revlon a long time ago and thought I would give it another go.
